The Intensive Care Unit is central to the Hospital's ability to provide the comprehensive care our critically ill patients need. Our team of Critical Care Specialists: Drs. Ainsley Boudreau, Francesca DiMauro, and Alexandra Floras, supervise and fully support our team of highly trained ICU Technicians and Animal Care Attendants to provide a team approach to the care of these complex patients. All of our ICU doctors are board-certified specialists in Critical Care with extensive training and experience. The Criticalists also work closely with the Emergency and other Specialty Services to provide 24-hour intensive care support to any patient whose condition is deemed critical.

Each pet is closely monitored around the clock using advanced equipment and interventions to deliver a complete range of critical services. Our on-site laboratory provides rapid test results, and our board-certified Radiologists are available to assist when advanced imaging is needed (ie. radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, etc). With the ability to employ advanced techniques such as mechanical ventilation, high flow oxygen therapy, targeted blood component transfusions and continuous monitoring, the Criticalists at our Hospital have the potential to effectively manage conditions and diseases that were once considered fatal or untreatable in veterinary medicine.

Some of the conditions that we treat in our ICU include:

  • Sepsis & septic shock
  • Endocrine emergencies (ie. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), Addison’s disease, etc)
  • Acute kidney injury (AKI)
  • Respiratory distress (ie. pneumonia, brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, collapsing trachea, etc)

  • Electrolyte & acid-base disturbances
  • Toxicities

The Critical Care Service is available 7 days per week, 365 days per year. We work closely with our 24/7 Emergency Service to provide our ICU patients with the best possible level of care.
